I believe the muses which inspire can be invoked in several ways. First, you need to be open for ideas. Even ideas which sound trivial may be of use. Also, keep a journal, drawing pad, or tape recorder for moments when a spark occurs or you feel “called” to jot something down or to draw. I’ve taken several drawing and painting classes during the last few years. My art instructor suggested that we carry a portable kit with us and be ready to draw or paint whenever and wherever. So, I’ve done this from time to time. It’s fun and it works. As a writer, I have carried notepads, journals, and a tape recorder. That too helps for those moments when ideas come. The muse can strike almost anywhere. Sometimes my creative moments happen while taking a shower or folding the laundry. Other times it comes while stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic as I drive along the Garden State Parkway. A song comes on the car radio setting up a memory which triggers an idea. So, I keep a mini notepad by the dashboard. I wrote my first novel Wildflowers in a notebook while commuting to my job in Manhattan. Sometimes you never know when the muse will visit, but it helps to be ready for her.
